ummmmmmmmmmm if you are doing 60mph in 3rd gear you might want to shift up. normal shift for me from 3rd to 4th is around 45-50

For flat land use I shift to 4th by 50- 55 mph. For pulling long grades. When needed I've run in 3rd at 50-55 mph seemingly forever sometimes. No ill effects. Regardless of gear or terrain I'm not a believer if ringing a street motors neck for any length of time (I'm the poor dumb schmuck that's gotta fix it.) Learn and listen to your motor...she'll tell you when she's happy or angry.

If you can not maintain or gain any speed when in fourth then it is time for third. Pulling a long or steep hill or going into a strong headwind. It is better to run 55 in third with the engine reving, then fight to maintain 50 in fourth lugging the engine down.
