Footman Loop Strap

Postby Lmo » Sun Apr 22, 2018 2:45 am

I became aware of a piece of equipment this morning that I'd never heard of (or at least the term for it); the Footman Loop Strap. If you have an older Ural/Dnepr you've got several on your sidecar body already.

There are all fashion of different types and sizes > https://www.google.com/search?client=fi ... O2evFU_BRc

Typical fitting used on sailboats for hiking straps (foot hold strap). Made from stainless. Available from most marine supply houses.

I seem to remember those being on my old FJ40 for the soft top. Looks like a handy mod.

I have been using footman's loops for ages. They were installed on the "back shelf" near rear window on 356 and then later 912/911 Porsches. (1950s-1970's) There were 2 more loops near the floor of the "back jump seats". Porsche sold leather straps to fit these to tie luggage to the back when the seats were folded down. Simple and they worked.

I still have some of those original leather straps in like-new condition. I never found another use for them. Maybe I'll think of something one of these days...

YMMV

Way back in my Paratrooper days, we used those to fab mounts for all sorts of gear.....if you gonna be using rope (instead of flat web material), there is a "domed" version also available............handy as a pocket on a shirt. :)

Here is a link to one of the many supply houses that carry that type stuff........

I've used these on bikes before and never thought to mention them. I prefer lines over straps so I use spacers to get additional clearance.

Fender washer for the inside.

Have added them to my trailer to strap loads onto it a few years back. Most face down from bottom of frame around the edge, so they don't stick out any, or interfere with flat deck of trailer. In the rear do have a couple facing up, so no straps would cross the plate or lights.

Remember that the bolts that hold the rear trunk lid hinges, or the bicycle pump can be simply swapped out for eye bolts of same diameter to provide load tie down points for anything over the spare. I did add fender washers on the inside to beef up to mounting area, and a shot of spray paint before installation.
Still like Charlie Chaplin's 1940 talkie "The Great Dictator"; had to abandon it as the inspiration for the theme of my Ural's paint scheme. People can't seem to tell satire from support. Too much public education.
