The Ultimate Ural Compliment

Postby Snakeoil » Wed Mar 09, 2016 8:03 pm

Blew the cobwebs out of the Ural today and put about 90 kms on her. Temps had to break all records. It was 79F this afteroon.

Anyway, stopped at my friend Jake's to say hello. He was out on his Honda CB500 tearing up some back roads and some dirt about 2 hours south. While I was talking to his wife, he rolled back in. Jake is in his 70's and still rides hard and fast. He's in the process of planning a 12,000 mile round trip to Alaska.

So, when I get ready to leave I fire up the Ural, which Jake has never heard run before and he says, "Wow, that thing is dead quiet. I think it is quieter than my BMW GS." :boogie:

I had a big grin on my face all the way home.

Gotta love those Nachi bearings and Herzog gears. Jake's last name is Herzog, by the way.

Rob

I haven't had anything said bad about my bike yet. My rig still sounds like a Tank, I rode without a helmet the other day down my street just to warm it up for carb syncing and I was like Damn! a lot noisier than with my helmet on.....needless to say, I got some valves to adjust soon.

Yeah, Jake is a little on the deaf side. But I'm still going with what he said.

Most people I meet are genuinely surprised at my Ural, it is clean and shiny, I will admit, but people seem to have the impression that they are real old dogs, when I start it the normal reaction is one of surprise that it doesnt sound like a ag of nails!

My favorite for describing a noise engine is "coffee can full of hickory nuts".

Yeah - when we do a parade with a bunch of Harleys they love to rev their engines - I try but it just isn't the same!

I've also had compliments on how quiet my Ural is compared to other bikes. "Loud pipes saves lives" doesn't work in my community. Too many def drivers. I'm going for "loud lights save lives" instead.
