Attention Guests...

Postby JohnBG » Thu Feb 11, 2010 11:32 pm

We are using too much CPU time and account executions on the server lately and I have been getting "nastygrams" from our hosting company wanting more money. :deal:

In order to cut back on the CPU and keep costs low, I have set the permissions so that guests can no loger use the forums "search" feature and do not have the ability to view attachments to posts. These features use a lot of processing time.

Guests can always join up as memebers by clicking on the "Register" link at the top of the page and have full access to all of the forums features.

It's easy and it only takes a minute to register.

Thanks for your understanding and patince.

So if I send my grandma (she's not a member) a link to my ride report, she won't be able to view the pictures?

How about if the pictures are linked from photobucket or such, instead of added as attachments? Can they be viewed by non-members?

Sign yer Granny up for an account! :old:

Seriously, If you link the image from another site, it still shows up for guests.

This just affects pictures or other documents that are "attached" to the post with the forums software.

If you have a photobucket or SmugMug or other picture hosting account, hotlink to them using the "Img" button at the top of the text box of your post or reply. That will help keep our server overhead down too.

I am just trying this for the time being to see if it drops our server usage to an acceptable level. If not, I'm gonna hafta upgrade to a more pricey hosting solution.

John, thanks for the headsup on my title and registration. I'd like to pull that picture from the mileage contest but can't find the article. Where is she listed?

Scott -
Why not just give your gramma your usercode/password and tell her to log in (as you)?
Don't know if there'd be some kind of conflict if you were already logged on, but that should be a rare occurrence -

Nope. Once a steed, always a steed.

No purges here Comrade... :devildog:

All the purging of old members and old posts happens at the other site....

John,

They should be able to search the site using the Google search, correct?

If you are unfamiliar with what that is, here's what to do. In Google searchbar, type in "site:www.sovietsteeds.com (enter search term)" and hit enter.

I'll be taking up a collection later this month or early next as our server bill is due in January.
